Tips for Umpires
Education
β’ Keep up to date with rules and rule interpretations. Have you read / understood the Rule Book?
β’ Donβt be afraid to ask your Umpire Mentor questions – knowledge is power.
β’ Maintain accreditation / attend umpiring courses.
β’ Watch NNL umpires on TV for attitude, positioning etc.
Appearance
β’ Be as fit as the players – warm up!
β’ Wear appropriate uniform β WHITE β as this gives a sense of authority and pride.
β’ Do not be lazy – keep up with the game always.
β’ Do not be late for the start of your match.
β’ Do not talk on your mobile phone or to other people during a match.
Umpiring skills
β’ Blow your whistle LOUDLY and assertively.
β’ Ensure that you are always in a position to SEE.
β’ CONCENTRATE for the entire quarter.
β’ Do not alter your initial umpiring decision β even if you realise it was wrong.
β’ Do not βmake upβ for an incorrect decision.
β’ You will make mistakes β so do AA umpires. Accept it and move on.
Attitude
β’ Be CONFIDENT β even if you arenβt
β’ But do not be ARROGANT β this is not a POWER TRIP.
β’ Umpire because you enjoy the challenge not for money.
β’ Be prepared to have players, coaches and spectators disagree with some of your decisions. There is no umpire who pleases every player, coach & supporter for the entire game at any level or in any sport.
β’ Be prepared to accept that you will be wrong some of the time. You will have good games and bad games just like players and coaches.
β’ Always SMILE β you are not the enemy; you are working WITH the players to create a fair and competitive game. Do not make it a negative experience for yourself. Focus on the positives.
β’ Put it all into PERSPECTIVE β this is sport / fun.
